In the high-octane world of motorsports, big-dollar sponsors often steal the spotlight—but what if you're like me, a grassroots racer trying to make it work on a shoestring budget? Contrary to popular belief, even small donations of $1,000 or less can make a tangible impact on your racing career. And these are the life line for so many young racers. I've found that with creativity, strategy, and community spirit, my "micro-sponsorships" can fuel more than just my car—they can power my growing brand.
The Power of Small Sponsorships
Racers like me at the amateur or semi-professional level can often overlook small contributions, focusing solely on chasing the “whale” sponsors. However, securing several micro-sponsorships from local businesses not only helps me financially but also builds a strong network of supporters invested in my journey. Here’s some things that I have found to make the most of it.
1. Offer Value Beyond Track Time
Sponsors want exposure—and I don’t need national TV coverage to provide it. With tools like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and newsletters, you can give back tenfold:
Shoutouts on social media. I make sure to personally thank each sponsor that has helped me. I really like calling out people by name, Mr. Mike, or Ms. Gabby as an example.
Logo placement on your suit, car, or helmet. This one is kinda obvious.
Behind-the-scenes content showing their support. I like to put myself into a place where I can show their products, NexGen, has great car care products so showing me use them is great,
Personal thank-you videos or meet-and-greets at events. Again, can't say this one enough.
Even a sticker on your kart or race car can become a badge of honor for a local business. Just ask for these, every sponsor I have has given me tons of stickers, pens and merch to pass out.
2. Create a Sponsorship Tier System
Break down donation options clearly:
$100 – Social shoutout + name on website
$250 – Name on kart + exclusive updates
$500 – Logo on kart + social series spotlight
$1,000 – Full “Micro Hero” package: logos, video features, and shoutouts
This structure gives potential supporters an easy way to get involved, no matter their budget. I know there are a a lot of different opinions on this one. I like to tell my potential sponsors that I want to see bespoke package we can come up with.
3. Leverage Community Connections
Your local community wants to support local talent—it just needs the right ask. Approach: Reach out to them ALL. Don't be afraid to ask. All you need is a couple of Yes's!!
Local businesses (cafes, barbers, repair shops)
School or alumni groups
Car clubs or motorsport groups
Friends and family crowdfunding through platforms like GoFundMe or Buy Me a Coffee
Frame it as a collaboration, not just a donation. Really important to do this one!!!
4. Be Professional, Even at $100
Small sponsors deserve the same appreciation as the big ones. Create a professional-looking sponsorship deck, follow up with updates, and share race results with them. Make them feel like part of the pit crew and that they are as important as ANY large sponsor! I ask each for a T-shirt, hat, anything that I can be wearing to show them the love they deserve.
5. Track & Share Impact
Keep a transparent budget to show where the money goes—tires, entry fees, fuel, or transport. Let sponsors know they helped you race at X event or placed Y in a competition. When people see impact, they’re more likely to contribute again. I break it down in my proposal. For X amount you'll be paying for, tires, entry fees, hotel, travel...
My Final Thoughts
In racing, every second counts—and so does every dollar. A $1,000 donation might not buy a new engine, but it can pay for crucial upgrades, cover travel, or even buy me my next set of tires. More importantly, it builds a loyal tribe of fans, friends, and followers who want to see me succeed.
Remember, it’s not about the size of the donation—it’s about the drive behind it.
Let me know if you'd like collaborate and we can turn this into a social media post, pitch deck, or even a flyer to hand out to potential sponsors so we all win!
