We all know that securing sponsorships is a critical step in a young racer's journey, providing financial support and industry connections that can propel our careers forward. However, as a 17-year-old, I have a question: should I adopt a highly professional approach, or should I inject a sense of playfulness into my sponsorship requests? YES THIS IS A LEGITMATE QUESTION FOR THE READER.

From what I can tell, it depends. What I do know is that I have to strike the right balance based on my personality, brand image, and my target sponsors.

Being Strictly Professional - according to my Dad

The type of sponsors that I must go for are established businesses that value professionalism, especially when investing in a young athlete like me. A professional approach demonstrates maturity, responsibility, and commitment, all the qualities that reassure sponsors their investment is worthwhile. Crafting a well-structured proposal, using formal language, and presenting a polished image can make a significant impact.

Additionally, professionalism is key when approaching larger corporations or industry-leading brands. These companies expect a level of decorum and a clear return on investment (ROI). I have to show that I understand marketing principles, audience engagement, and brand alignment, and will make me a more attractive sponsorship candidate.

The Power of Playfulness - according to me and my teenage friends

Playfulness can be a refreshing approach, particularly for brands looking to connect with a younger demographic. Am I a professional racer, yes, am I also a 17-year-old girl that enjoys going to the mall and trying out the free samples of make-up, skin care, and hair care products, Absolutely. Looking at you Colourpop and Sol de Janeiro.

A unique, engaging sponsorship request can stand out from the dozens of traditional proposals businesses receive. I try to inject humor, creativity, colors, great story telling pictures and my personality into my pitches that can make them more memorable and showcase my true passion for the sport.

I'm hoping that this approach may work particularly well for lifestyle brands, social media-driven companies, or businesses that thrive on fun and energetic branding. A clever video pitch, an eye-catching design, or a witty social media campaign can differentiate me from other racers seeking sponsorships.

It's All About the Balance

Rather than choosing one extreme or the other, I've been told that the most effective strategy often lies in blending professionalism with personality. Here’s how I try to strike the perfect balance:

  • Know My Audience: I research my potential sponsors to understand their brand identity and tailor my approach accordingly. With construction companies (care of my dad), I'm very formal and driven to the point. With brands like E.L.F or Chewy I want to be playful and creative.

  • Maintain Clear Communication: Even if I take a playful approach, I have to ensure that my proposal clearly outlines my value proposition, goals, and what the sponsor will gain in return.

  • Be Authentic: Whether I'm choosing a professional or playful tone, authenticity is key. I try to let my personality shine through while maintaining respect and seriousness about the partnership.

  • Showcase Your Marketability: I admit that this is an area I work on daily to improve. I know that I need to highlight my social media presence, community engagement, and how I can help promote the sponsor’s brand.

"My" Conclusion

As a 17-year-old racer, my approach to sponsorship requests have to reflect my personality while aligning with my target sponsors. If you're reaching out to corporate sponsors, professionalism will likely yield the better results. If I'm engaging with lifestyle or youth-focused brands, a playful and creative approach will probably help me stand out more. Ultimately, the best sponsorship requests that I want to provide are those that blend my maturity with my individuality, and showing potential sponsors that I'm both marketable and a dedicated athlete.
