When people hear "ADHD," they might picture a hyperactive kid, unable to focus or prone to impulsivity—traits that seem incompatible with piloting a 1,100-pound missile around hairpin corners and tight chicanes. And sure, those stereotypes might hold true in some aspects of life, but racing? Racing is different.
In the cockpit, everything that feels chaotic in everyday life aligns perfectly. The speed, the controlled chaos, the endless flow of information, and the sheer thrill of the chase—they all sharpen your focus. ADHD doesn’t hinder me here; it’s my partner, offering clarity and precision if I just pay attention to what it has to say.
At over 100 mph, the world slows down. It becomes clearer, easier to process. I can see the line, anticipate the next turn, and feel the braking zone approaching—all as if in slow motion. My thoughts, usually scattered, lock into laser focus. My energy, often erratic, channels seamlessly into the task at hand. It’s just me and the car, completely in sync.
I hear my team over the radio, but at the same time, I don’t—it’s like their voices fade into the background of this focused stillness. It’s...quiet.
When I race, ADHD isn’t my obstacle. It’s my superpower.
